The Lies You Tell Yourself (And How to Break Free)

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, ‘I’m too old to start over, who am I to chase my dreams now?’, or ‘what if people don’t understand or support the real me?’, or ‘I should just be grateful for what I have and stop wanting more.’ These thoughts, the quiet whispers of doubt, have a way of settling deep into our minds, shaping the stories we tell ourselves and the beliefs we have. Over time, they become truths—not because they are real, but because we’ve repeated them so often that they feel unshakable.

But here’s the thing: those beliefs were never yours to begin with.

beliefs

They were handed down—by society, family, past experiences. Somewhere along the way, you absorbed the idea that you had to follow a script: be responsible, put others first, not take risks. You learned to measure your worth by what you did for others, not by who you truly are.

Now, standing in the middle of your life, you feel the weight of those beliefs. They keep you stuck in a cycle of self-doubt, afraid to step into your power. But it’s time to challenge them. It’s time to break free.

Identify Beliefs That Hold You Back

Notice the “Shoulds” in Your Mind

‘I should be happy with what I have.’ ‘I should have it all figured out by now.’ ‘I should be more grateful, not wanting more.’ Pay attention to these thoughts. Every “should” is a clue you might be living according to someone else’s expectations instead of your own truth.

Recognize the Fear Behind Your Excuses

‘I don’t have time to focus on myself.’ → (Am I afraid of what I’ll discover?) ‘It’s too late to change now.’ → (What if I fail?) ‘I’m just not the kind of person who takes big risks.’ → (Who told me that?) Your excuses aren’t just practical concerns—they’re rooted in fear. Once you see that, you can begin to challenge them.

Ask Yourself: Who Would I Be Without This Belief?

If you weren’t telling yourself that it’s too late, or that you’re not good enough, what would you do differently? This question alone can open the door to possibilities you’ve never allowed yourself to consider.

Shift from Limitation to Empowerment

Once you start identifying your limiting beliefs, you need a way to shift them.

  1. Catch It in the Moment
The next time you hear your inner critic say, ‘I can’t do this’, pause. Take a breath. Ask yourself: Is this actually true? Or is this just a thought I’ve believed for a long time?
  2. Flip the Script
Instead of I’m too old to start something new, say: I have the wisdom and experience to do this my way.
Instead of I’m not good enough, say: I am learning and growing every day.
Instead of I have to figure it all out first, say: I can take the next small step and see where it leads.
  3. Speak to Yourself Like You Would a Friend
Imagine a close friend coming to you with the same self-doubt. Would you tell her she’s too late, not enough, or unworthy? Of course not. So why do you speak to yourself that way? Start replacing self-criticism with self-compassion.

Prove Your Old Beliefs Wrong—One Small Action at a Time

You don’t have to make a massive leap today. Just take one small step that challenges your limiting belief.

  • If you believe you’re not creative, try writing, painting, or dancing just for yourself.
  • If you believe you’re not brave, say ‘yes’ to something that excites and scares you.
  • If you believe you’re too old to start over, find someone who did—and let them inspire you.

You Are Who You Choose to Become

Your limiting beliefs are just stories. And the good news? You can rewrite them.

This season of your life isn’t about playing small or settling. It’s about reclaiming your power, your passions, and your purpose. It’s about trusting that your inner wisdom knows the way—even when your doubts try to drown it out.

So, ask yourself: ‘What would my life look like if I truly believed in myself?’

And then, take one step toward that version of you today.

Because she’s already inside you—waiting to be set free.
