There’s a moment that happens in the middle of an ordinary day. You’re folding laundry, or driving somewhere familiar, or playing with your kids on the floor, and a question rises up from somewhere quieter than your to-do list.
Is this the life I’m actually choosing? Or is it the life that’s simply happening to me?
Most of us never stop long enough to ask.
The Drift Nobody Names
Life doesn’t usually fall apart in one dramatic moment. It drifts.
One small decision at a time. One “I’ll deal with that later.” One version of yourself you agreed to be years ago, without ever revisiting whether it still fits.
And then one day you look up and wonder how you got here. Not because anything is broken. But because you’ve been living on autopilot, and no one told you that autopilot has its own destination.
A Day That Woke Me Up
A number of years ago, I caught myself moving through an entire day without a single conscious choice that was truly mine. I was reacting. Pleasing others, fulfilling their needs, meeting their expectations, before I had even asked what I needed or wanted.
There was no room left in the day for me. I had given it all away before it even began.

That was the moment two questions took hold of me, and they haven’t let go since:
What am I choosing? What am I creating?
Not as guilt. Not as another thing to get right. Just as an honest, gentle check-in with myself.
Awareness Comes Before Anything Else
In the WILD! framework, this is where everything begins. Wisdom isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about becoming aware enough to ask the real questions and trusting yourself enough to sit with what comes up.
You cannot align with your truth if you’re not first aware of where you actually stand.
So this isn’t about analyzing your whole life or drawing up a five-year plan. It’s about presence. It’s about noticing, in this ordinary moment, what you are actually choosing and what that choice is quietly building.
Because you are always creating something. The only question is whether you’re creating it consciously or by default.
Two Questions, One Practice
Try this the next time you catch yourself moving through your day without thinking:
Pause. Ask yourself, what am I choosing right now? Not the big sweeping choices. The small one, right in front of you.
Then ask, what is this choice creating? Not tomorrow. Not someday. Today.
Notice what comes up without rushing to fix it or judge it. Awareness doesn’t require action yet. It only asks you to see clearly.
Some days the answer will feel aligned. You’ll notice you’re choosing rest, or honesty, or a boundary that honors you. Other days you’ll notice you’re choosing avoidance, or old habits that no longer serve who you’re becoming. Both answers are useful. Both are information. Neither means you’re doing life wrong.
You Are Always Becoming
Here’s what I keep returning to:
You are always becoming; you are always creating. Today you are more than you were yesterday, and tomorrow you are more than you are today.
That means the life you’re living right now isn’t fixed. It isn’t finished. It’s being shaped, choice by quiet choice, in ways you have far more say over than the drift would have you believe.
You don’t need to overhaul your life to start living it consciously. You just need to start asking.
What am I choosing?
What am I creating?
Let the questions sit with you today. See what rises when you finally give them room to be answered.
Live Your Truth!
Reflection questions for you:
Where in your life have you been choosing by default rather than by design?
What is one small choice today that would feel more aligned with who you’re becoming?
If you looked honestly at your days, what are you currently creating, and is it what you actually want?
If you’re ready to go deeper with these questions, my free WILD! Wisdom and Awareness Workbook was created for exactly this kind of reflection. It’s a gentle place to start putting words to what you’re noticing.
