How to Make Choices Based on Your Values

There will always be something to do.

I sat down recently to prioritize my day, and my list was full of things I want to do and things I could do. Both felt equally loud. Maybe you know that moment, when everything on the page seems to be asking for you at once.

The List That Never Ends

I am learning a lot about prioritizing in my business, Live Your Truth Journey. I want to be sure I am tending to each area, and each area has its own voice.

Erin Marie Barry Live Your Truth Journey

Here is the truth I named for myself that morning: the list will never be finished. Not this week, not next year. There will always be one more thing.

If I measure my worth by how much I complete, I will always feel behind. That is not a lack in me. It is simply what happens when expectations are driving.

Expectations Are Loud. Values Are Quiet.

Expectations come from everywhere. They come from the voice that says a good business owner, mother, or friend does it all. They come from old stories, comparison, and the pace of the world around us.

Values speak differently. They are quiet, steady, and patient. They do not shout. They wait for you to get still enough to listen.

Your values are your inner wisdom speaking in plain language. When you choose from that place, you stop asking “what is expected of me?” and start asking “what is true for me?”

My Half Day of Loose Ends

Here is one thing I have discovered. I need half a day each week to tie up the loose ends from what I did during the week.

At first, I judged that. I wondered if I was being inefficient. Then I realized something tender: the half day is an act of love. It gives my work room to land. It lets me close each week with presence instead of carrying it with me.

I am learning to harmonize doing and being, professionally and personally. Not one or the other. Both, in rhythm, finding the flow.

Where Love Enters the Calendar

Love is not only a feeling. It is a way of choosing.

When I let my values lead, I am extending compassion to myself. I am trusting that I do not have to do everything today to be whole. I already am.

Notice what happens in your body when you choose from love instead of expectation. Often there is a softening, a deeper breath, a sense of spaciousness.

A few gentle ways to explore this:

  • Name your top three values and place them where you will see them, like on your desk or your bathroom mirror.
  • Listen before you list. Take three slow breaths before you write your day, and ask what wants your attention most.
  • Leave room. Let part of your week be unscheduled, so being has a place beside doing.

A Moment for Reflection

Take a quiet moment with these questions:

  • What am I doing right now because it is expected of me?
  • What am I doing because it is deeply true for me?
  • If I trusted my inner wisdom completely, what would I let go of this week?
  • Where could I add a little more love to my days?

What Becomes Possible

When your choices are led by your values, your days begin to feel different. Less like a race and more like a rhythm. You wake with more enthusiasm because you are living your truth, not someone else’s list.

The to-do list will still be there. But you will meet it differently, grounded, unhurried, and connected to what matters most.

You are always becoming. Today, you get to choose from love.
